Artist Statement
Photography is a newly developed passion of mine, stemming mostly from my ambition and love for the arts. Photography is an art form that has been present in our world/society for more than a century. The importance of photographs is that they help capture moments of importance and they essentially give us memories that last for a lifetime.
While taking photographs, I attempted to not only capture an important or interesting moment/instance, but I aimed to make it aesthetically pleasing and more or less make a picture that tells a story beyond just an initial look. I tried to get up close and personal with my objects, and I tried shooting my photos from the hip. By editing my pictures I was able to attain the goal of telling a story. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and its for that reason that a that I tried editing my pictures to be somewhat different than normal. Some of the tools I used in editing were the gradient tool, and the paint bucket. The gradient tool helped me to achieve the effect of a gradual color change, which made the photo more aesthetically pleasing. The paint bucket tool was the first tool I used, and it was pretty straightforward. You would select an area you would want to paint a certain color, and the paint bucket would paint that area for you. The paint bucket is a magnificent tool that helps make a photo stand out, especially because it brings vibrancy to the photo. Desaturation was another tool I used when editing my photos and it somewhat had the same effect. However desaturation not only made the photo stand out, but it helped draw focus to a certain thing or object, which created a focus point on the photo. One tool that I found interesting was the liquefying tool. This tool created an effect of exaggeration, because it caused solid objects to become liquefied. These were the way I tried to tell a story, with the help of Adobe Photoshop for editing my pictures.
In essence photography as now developed and become a lens into the outside world. Along with the ability to edit a photo (to put our distinctive style upon it), we now have a lens and insight into other countries like never before. Through my photographs I tried as much as possible to make an effort and create a distinctive style of my own, just like other street photographers like Helen Levitt, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, the father of modern photojournalism. Cartier-Bresson worked exclusively with black and white photographs, and I tried to emulate his style by having a desaturated photo.
